What Is a Fulfillment Center?

A fulfillment center, also known as a 3PL (third-party logistics), is a specialized warehouse offering e-commerce fulfillment services.

The term "third-party logistics" refers to fulfillment, provided by a separate entity – the third party—rather than the seller. This differs from in-house fulfillment, where the seller manages the fulfillment process.

How Does a 3PL Work?

A fulfillment center operates as an intermediary between the seller, supplier, and buyer.

After sourcing products, sellers establish their relationship with a 3PL. At this time, onboarding is completed and an account established. Business details and product information are provided. Selling platforms (such as Shopify, BigCommerce, WooCommerce, Magento, Amazon, etc.) are integrated with the fulfillment center's Warehouse Management Software (WMS).

Suppliers and manufacturers ship products directly to the fulfillment center. Upon receipt, the 3PL may initiate value added services like inspection, labeling, repackaging, or kitting before products are ready for sale.

Apart from the seller-supplier relationship, the fulfillment center also handles the connection between seller and customer. Orders received via selling platforms are synchronized with the WMS for fulfillment. The 3PL fulfills these orders and syncs tracking information back to the customers.

From the manufacturer to the fulfillment center and finally to the buyer, orders are fulfilled seamlessly, requiring little involvement from the seller.

Why Use a 3PL?

What are the advantages of employing a third-party for fulfillment?

When managing fulfillment becomes overwhelming, a decision must be made between an in-house team or a third-party service. Many businesses prefer using a third-party fulfillment center. There are several benefits to this route.

Reduce Overhead Costs

Outsourcing to a fulfillment center lowers overhead expenses by eliminating the need for large expenses such as warehouses, equipment, utilities, and special software.

Increase Time

Fulfillment tasks or managing an in-house team demands time that could be better spent on business growth. Outsourcing frees up time for business development and progress—something that cannot be outsourced.

Optimize Efficiency

Fulfillment centers excel in efficiency, ensuring faster and more accurate order fulfillment compared to multitasking in-house teams. This is a win for your business, and also for your customers.

Satisfy Customer Expectations

Meeting customer expectations for fast shipping and fulfillment is critical. Using a 3PL guarantees quicker order fulfillment and delivery for satisfied customers.

Decrease Shipping Cost

Bulk shipping contracts result in better rates, benefiting your customers and your business's bottom line. 3PL’s have the volume needed to negotiate such rates.
